Overview:

As president and CEO of MZM Construction Co, Inc., Marjorie Perry a Newark native is an innovator and role model for women in non-traditional fields. Her Newark based firm, founded in 1992, and has been cited for consistently completing construction projects within budget and on time. Recognized as a successful entrepreneur, her company’s General Contracting work includes 3.2 million dollar contract over 4 years for the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, 1.6 million dollar for Delta Airlines and Continental Airlines at Newark Liberty International Airport, 1.3 million dollar for Verizon Newark and , has successfully completed carpentry and FF&E for Marriott Courtyard/Residence Inn Hotels located in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

A native of Newark, Perry developed her marketing skills at 3M, United Airlines and Johnson & Johnson. She started her own public relations firm in 1985. In 1992 MZM was formed out of a marketing project with Perry and two additional partners. When the firm’s partners decided to move on from the company, Perry bought them out, hired her own team and negotiated new contracts for the firm. Since then, billings have topped $1.5 million each year and the company continues to grow under her leadership and direction. She was accepted into Newark’s Incubator EDC program, March of 1997.

Recognized as actively involved in her community, Ms. Perry has received many awards and business citations including the Outstanding Minority/Woman Business from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and NJSBDC in 2004. Numerous letters of praise for her volunteer work at Montclair Unity Church. She is certified as a New Jersey Certified Small Business Enterprise and selected to be one of the first 15 protégés of the NY/NJ Mentoring Program for the Port Authority and a graduate from Rutgers Leadership Academy 2004. Ms. Perry has been profiled for her outstanding business on the CBS Morning Show, NJN and a regular feature guest on the Steve Adubato “Business Now” Show. Special featured has been done in Essence Magazine and profiled for New Jersey’s Star Ledger newspaper. She currently sits on Essex County College Skills Build Board for the WISE Center and assisted Attorney General Peter Harvey and his staff in setting up the outreach program for NJ School Construction Program. Recently named to the Governor’s Growth & Economic Committee, a board Member of Black Chamber of Commerce for New Jersey and board member Newark Regional Business Partnership NRBP.

She is certified by the state of New Jersey for school construction, certified by the New York Purchasing Council and the City of New York’s locally-based Business Enterprise Program, as well. A former schoolteacher and adjunct professor at Essex County College, Perry has a B.A. degree from Kean College of New Jersey. MBA, in finance from New Jersey Institute of Technology. She also received a scholarship and completed the Executive Minority Business Program at Dartmouth University’s Tuck School of Business.
