“Greatness in the Making” featuring Nina Gokita

By: Elisa Basnight

We are celebrating GAN Girls to recognize and honor their dedication to the areas of career readiness, education, their active participation in extracurricular activities, and workforce-related accomplishments. These featured young women have demonstrated exceptional growth, leadership, and commitment to excellence. By acknowledging GAN Girls’ achievements, we aim to inspire you and others to continue striving for greatness and to highlight the importance of education, workforce exploration and well-rounded development.

This GAN Greatness in the Making feature celebrates Nina Gokita. Nina is a 12th grader at Lafayette High School in Williamsburg, Virginia. She aspires to go into the field of Environmental Engineering. Nina participates in the GAN Champion for Empowerment and Opportunity® Program. Nina was also a 2023 GAN Scholar and GAN Scholarship Recipient selected for the Smith College Summer Science and Engineering Program. When asked did the GAN SSEP enrichment experience meet her expectations, Nina commented:

“The program did not only meet my expectations, [but it also] far exceeded them. I was excited to go, but I was a little afraid that it would be too much like school. This was much better than school, I learned about things I was passionate about, and it reassured me about the career path I wanted to pursue in college. I want to pursue engineering with a focus on sustainability, and learning about plants and the environment was something I found interesting and something I will continue to be interested in during my lifetime.”

Nina has truly exemplified what it means to be great in the making. Her dedication to her studies is evident through her impressive academic achievements. Not only does Nina excel in the classroom, but she also shines in her extracurriculars. Nina was accepted to five (5) top colleges & universities. She will attend the University of Virginia in the fall. She will be a speaker at her June graduation. Let’s cheer for Nina as she continues to make her mark and inspire us all with her greatness in the making!”

We want to hear about and highlight GAN Girl successes in education, workforce exploration and enrichment experiences in the Skilled Trades, Supply Chain and STEM. The Tracker reflects the annual points accrued (based on your Quarter) for all four focus areas, as well as the aggregate total. It is an easy way to see where you are excelling and where you might need more work. Points reset at the beginning of each new GAN Quarter.

What is GAN Quarter

Your GAN Quarter is the Quarter of the year in which you joined, expressed as QTR1, QTR2, QTR3, and QTR4. For example, if you joined GAN in January through March, your GAN Quarter would be QTR1. If you joined GAN in April through June, your quarter would be QTR2, and so on. Your GAN Quarter also controls your annual points accrual period. For example, if you’re a QTR2 member, you accrue annual points from April of the current year to April of the next year. This allows all GAN members accrue points on an annual basis in a fair manner.
